How this gallons to litres calculator works
Enter a volume in US gallons. The calculator multiplies it by 3.78541 and shows the result in litres, always to four decimal places. Litres = gallons × 3.78541.
The input is a US liquid gallon, as the field label says. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches. With one inch equal to 2.54 centimetres, that volume is 3.785411784 litres. This page uses 3.78541, that figure rounded to five decimal places. A UK imperial gallon is a different size, about 4.54609 litres, and it is not the factor here.
Worked example: 1 × 3.78541 = 3.78541, and four decimal places print that as 3.7854 L. Ten gallons is 10 × 3.78541 = 37.8541 L. Five gallons is 18.92705, and the next digit rounds the fourth decimal up, so the page shows 18.9271 L. Half a gallon is 1.8927 L.
Any finite number is accepted, including 0 and negatives. 0 gallons is 0.0000 L, and −1 gallon is −3.7854 L. An empty box shows --. The result is labelled L. Millilitres are not printed. One litre is 1,000 millilitres, so 3.7854 L is 3,785.4 millilitres after the four-decimal rounding.
