How this metre to kilometre calculator works
Enter a length in metres. The calculator divides it by 1,000 and shows the result in kilometres, always to six decimal places. Kilometres = metres ÷ 1,000.
One kilometre is exactly 1,000 metres by definition. Moving from metres to kilometres shifts the decimal point three places left. 1 metre becomes 0.001000 km. 500 metres becomes 0.500000 km. 1,000 metres becomes 1.000000 km.
Worked examples: 100 metres is 0.100000 km. A 1,500 metre race is 1.500000 km. A 10,000 metre race is 10.000000 km. A marathon of 42,195 metres is 42.195000 km. Dividing by 1,000 is the same as multiplying by 0.001; the page uses division.
Any finite number is accepted, including 0 and negatives. 0 metres is 0.000000 km, and −1,000 metres is −1.000000 km. An empty box shows --. To go back, multiply the kilometres by 1,000.
