Percentile Calculator

How this percentile calculator works

Enter your rank and the total number of candidates. The calculator uses Percentile = ((Total − Rank) ÷ Total) × 100. Rank 1 out of 100 is 99.00%. Rank 50 out of 100 is 50.00%. The result is shown to two decimal places.

Under this formula, the percentile is the share of the list counted as below your rank: Total − Rank people, divided by Total. Rank 1 of 500 is 99.80%. Rank 10 of 1,000 is 99.00%. Rank 250 of 1,000 is 75.00%. When Rank equals Total, the percentile is 0.00%.

Total candidates must be greater than 0. Both fields must be finite numbers. An empty box or a zero total leaves the result as “--.” A better (smaller) rank raises the percentile; rank 25 of 200 is 87.50%.

This is a rank-and-total tool of the kind often used on exam or merit lists. It is not a statistical percentile computed from a full set of scores. Check by hand: subtract rank from total, divide by total, multiply by 100.

Percentile examples

Each row is ((Total − Rank) ÷ Total) × 100, rounded to two decimals as on the calculator.

How to read the result

  • ((Total − Rank) ÷ Total) × 100

    Rank 1 of 100 → 99.00%.

  • Better rank, higher %

Closer to 1 raises the percentile.

  • Last place

Rank equal to total → 0.00%.

  • Not a score list

Only rank and total are used here.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does this percentile calculator find?

A rank-based percentile from your position and the total number of candidates. The formula is Percentile = ((Total − Rank) ÷ Total) × 100. Rank 1 out of 100 is 99.00%. Rank 50 out of 100 is 50.00%. The result is shown to two decimal places.

  • What do Rank and Total candidates mean?

Rank is your place in the list (1 is first). Total candidates is how many people are in that list. Rank 10 out of 1,000 is ((1000 − 10) ÷ 1000) × 100 = 99.00%.

  • Why is rank 1 not 100%?

This formula counts the share of candidates ranked below you as (Total − Rank) ÷ Total. With rank 1 of 100, 99 candidates are below you, so the percentile is 99.00%. Rank 1 of 500 is 99.80%.

  • What if I am last?

When Rank equals Total, the numerator is zero, so the percentile is 0.00%. Rank 100 out of 100 shows 0.00%.

  • Is this the same as a statistics percentile of a data set?

No. This page does not take a list of scores. It only uses Rank and Total candidates with ((Total − Rank) ÷ Total) × 100, the form often used for exam or merit lists.

  • What inputs are required?

Both fields must hold finite numbers, and Total candidates must be greater than 0. An empty field or a total of 0 leaves the result as “--.”

  • What is rank 250 out of 1,000?

((1000 − 250) ÷ 1000) × 100 = 75.00%. Rank 500 out of 2,000 is also 75.00%, because three quarters of the list sit below that rank in this formula.

  • Does a higher percentile mean a better rank?

Yes under this formula. A smaller rank (closer to 1) raises (Total − Rank) and raises the percentile. Rank 25 out of 200 is 87.50%.

  • How precise is the answer?

The percentile is fixed at two decimal places. Rank 1 of 500 shows 99.80%. Rank 25 of 200 shows 87.50%.

  • How do I check the answer by hand?

    Subtract your rank from the total, divide by the total, then multiply by 100. For rank 50 and total 100: (100 − 50) ÷ 100 × 100 = 50.00%.
