5 Courses That Could Teach You More Than an MBA
An MBA can cost lakhs and take two years. But the skills that drive business growth, like understanding customers, spreading ideas, selling and designing great products, can be learned in a few months with free or low-cost courses. This roadmap takes you through five of them, from Wharton, Google, LinkedIn and the Open University. It covers marketing, UX, sales, consumer psychology and growth, and each step comes with an official link.
1. Understanding Your Customers (Open University)
Link: https://www.open.edu/openlearn/money-business/understanding-your-customers
- It's a short introduction to understanding customers, clarifying key marketing concepts and the differences between consumer and B2B marketing.
- Session 1 covers why customers matter, marketing as an exchange, and customer experience management. Session 2 covers behavioural economics, neuromarketing and consumer culture theory. Session 3 covers customers in organisations and B2B marketing.
- It's free, and you create an account and complete it for a free statement of participation or digital badge.
- MBA equivalent: Consumer Behavior / Marketing Fundamentals.
2. Viral Marketing (Wharton)
Link: https://www.coursera.org/learn/wharton-contagious-viral-marketing
- It's taught by Jonah Berger, Associate Professor of Marketing at The Wharton School.
- It covers how to make ideas stick, increase your influence, generate word of mouth, and use social networks to spread information.
- On Coursera you can choose a free or paid plan. The free plan gives access to all materials except graded items, so you need the paid plan for the certificate.
- The "6 hours" figure from your post is plausible. Reviewers describe it as about 1–1.5 hours a week.
- MBA equivalent: Marketing Strategy / Social Influence.
3. LinkedIn Marketing Strategy Certification
Link: https://business.linkedin.com/marketing-solutions/linkedin-marketing-labs (search "LinkedIn Marketing Labs certifications" if the page has moved)
- It is the intermediate certification, covering full-funnel strategies, including brand awareness and lead generation.
- It's free: certification, optional courses and practice tests are all free.
- At launch, the exam was 60 minutes with 60 multiple-choice questions, with three attempts. Check the current rules on the site, as these may have changed.
- MBA equivalent: B2B Marketing / Digital Marketing.
4. Sales Training: Practical Selling Techniques (Chris Croft)
Links:
- Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/learn/sales-practical
- Udemy: https://www.udemy.com/course/master-successful-selling-techniques-sales-training/
- The Udemy syllabus covers building a sales relationship, diagnosing needs, prescribing a solution, objection handling and closing.
- The Coursera version is included with Coursera Plus
- Chris Croft is a UK trainer who has taught sales skills to companies for over 20 years.
- MBA equivalent: Sales Management / Negotiation.
5. Google UX Design Professional Certificate
Link: https://www.coursera.org/professional-certificates/google-ux-design
- It has seven online courses. Some listings now say eight, so check the page.
- The courses include Foundations of UX, Start the UX Design Process, Build Wireframes and Low-Fidelity Prototypes, and Conduct UX Research and Test Early Concepts.
- You finish with a UX portfolio with three end-to-end projects.
- The duration is about six months at 10 hours per week.
- The price is $49 per month on Coursera Plus, with a 7-day free trial.
- MBA equivalent: Product Management / Design Thinking.
Capstone project (the part that makes this useful)
Learning from courses alone won't teach you much. Do this alongside them:
- Pick a real or imaginary product (or your own side business).
- Customer research (course 1): write 3 customer personas and their buying triggers.
- Positioning and virality (course 2): create a shareable campaign idea.
- B2B plan (course 3): sketch a full-funnel LinkedIn campaign.
- Sales pitch (course 4): write a pitch with answers to the top 5 objections, then practise it on a real person.
- UX (course 5): prototype the product or landing page and test it with 5 users.
