|---|---|---|---|
| Big tech and software | Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Salesforce, Apple | Structured thinking, metrics and product sense, data comfort, behavioral fit | |
| Investment banking and markets | JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Barclays, Deutsche Bank | Accounting, valuation, markets knowledge, fit and motivation | |
| Consulting and advisory | McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG, Accenture, Kearney | Case interviews, mental math, structured communication, fit | |
| Consumer, FMCG and e-commerce | HUL, P&G, Nestlé, ITC, PepsiCo, Flipkart, Amazon retail | Consumer insight, sales and operations judgment, analytics, leadership | |
| Payments, fintech and financial services | American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Razorpay, Kotak | Analytics, risk and product thinking, finance basics | |
| Conglomerates and industrial groups | Tata group (including its leadership programme), Reliance, Aditya Birla, Mahindra | Group discussions, cases, leadership, business judgment |
Skill 1: Structured problem solving and case interviewing
Breaking an unfamiliar business problem into parts, doing quick math, and reaching a clear recommendation is the core test in consulting, strategy, product, operations and general-management interviews, so every MBA should be able to do it out loud.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PrepLounge case library | 200+ cases with solutions, drills and a mental-math tool | Free basic tier, paid premium | Ongoing | Practice cases by type and difficulty |
| PrepLounge peer practice | Mock case interviews with other candidates | Free trial meetings, then premium | 90 minutes per session | Live practice and feedback |
| Hacking the Case Interview: YouTube channel guide | Curated list of free case interview channels | Free | Self-paced | Choosing which channels to follow |
| Management Consulted | Free videos plus paid course library | Free and paid | Self-paced | Full recruiting picture: cases, resumes, networking |
| CaseInterview.com (Victor Cheng) | Free case interview preparation program | Free and paid | Self-paced | Framework thinking and structure |
| Case in Point (Marc Cosentino) and The Pyramid Principle (Barbara Minto) | Books |
Plan. PrepLounge's experts suggest at least 30 full cases with a case partner before a real interview, and its active members average about 18 mock interviews. Budget 6-8 weeks at 6-8 hours a week: learn the basics for two weeks, then do 4-5 timed cases a week.
Beyond consulting. Product, strategy, operations and finance interviews use the same skills as market sizing, profitability and "should we enter this market" questions. The same practice carries over, so do not skip it if you are not targeting consulting firms.
Skill 2 - financial modeling and valuation.
Building a three-statement model and a DCF from scratch is the standard test for investment banking, equity research, corporate finance, FP&A, strategy and M&A roles, and it is increasingly asked in consulting and tech finance interviews too.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aswath Damodaran's valuation class (2017 session playlist) | Full NYU Stern course on YouTube, with free slides and data | Free | About 28 sessions of 80 minutes, so 6-8 weeks | Understanding how valuation actually works |
| CFI: FMVA certification | Certificate with a final exam (70% to pass) | Paid subscription | CFI estimates 100-120 hours, so 10-12 weeks | Excel modeling for banking, FP&A, corp dev |
| Coursera: Wharton Business and Financial Modeling | 5-course specialization, beginner level | Coursera subscription (audit for free) | Listed as about 4 weeks at 10 hours a week | Spreadsheet modeling basics before CFI |
| Wall Street Prep | Banking-style modeling and valuation courses | Paid | Self-paced | Investment banking and PE interview prep |
| Breaking Into Wall Street | Banking-focused courses and free guides | Paid, with free guides | Self-paced | IB, equity research, markets |
| Financial Edge | Training used by banks, plus free tutorials | Paid, with free content | Self-paced | Accounting and modeling refresh |
| CFA Institute: CFA Program | Professional charter, three exam levels | Paid | Roughly 300 hours per level (approximate) | Asset management, research, markets |
| GARP: FRM | Risk management certification | Paid | Several months per part | Risk roles at banks |
How to use this section. Start with Damodaran for concepts, then build models in Excel through CFI or Wall Street Prep. For bank and markets roles, add CFA Level 1 or FRM Part 1 only if you have 4-6 months to spare; for consulting or tech roles, the modeling certificate alone is enough.
Proof of work. Build a full valuation of one listed Indian or global company using its annual report, with a DCF, comparable companies and a sensitivity table, and be ready to defend every assumption in an interview.
Skill 3: Data analytics (Excel, SQL, BI)
Every sector on this list hires people who can pull data with SQL, analyze it in Excel, and present it in a dashboard, so this is the highest-return skill to learn first if you are not from a quantitative background.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate | 8-course certificate on Coursera, 180+ hours | Coursera subscription (financial aid available) | Under 6 months at under 10 hours a week | Complete beginners who want a structured path |
| Microsoft PL-300: Power BI Data Analyst Associate | Exam-based certification, free prep on Microsoft Learn | Free prep, paid exam | 4-8 weeks | Business and BI analyst roles in Microsoft-stack firms |
| Kaggle Learn: Intro to SQL and Pandas | Free micro-courses with a completion certificate | Free | About 3-4 hours per course | Fast, hands-on SQL and Python starts |
| Mode SQL Tutorial | Free interactive SQL lessons | Free | 2-3 weeks | Basic to advanced SQL |
| DataLemur | Interview-style SQL problems | Free tier, paid extras | Ongoing practice | Big tech and consulting analytics interviews |
| StrataScratch | Real SQL and Python interview questions by company | Free tier, paid extras | Ongoing practice | Company-specific data interviews |
| Alex The Analyst (YouTube) | SQL, Power BI, Tableau and portfolio project playlists | Free | Self-paced | Learning by following along |
| Kevin Stratvert (YouTube) | Excel and Power BI tutorials | Free | Self-paced | Excel formulas, pivots and charts |
Suggested order. Excel (2 weeks), then SQL (3-4 weeks with daily practice), then Power BI or Tableau (2-3 weeks), then the PL-300 exam only if you want the credential.
Proof of work. Publish one dashboard on a public dataset, such as sales, retail or HR data from Kaggle Datasets, with a one-page note on the business question it answers and what you would recommend.
Skill 4: Python and applied machine learning
Python matters most for analytics, product, risk, quant and data-driven strategy roles at tech firms and banks; for other roles, SQL and Excel come first and Python is a strong differentiator rather than a requirement.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kaggle Learn (start with Intro to Machine Learning) | Free in-browser micro-courses on Python, pandas, SQL and ML, with completion certificates | Free | About 3-4 hours per course | Fast hands-on start with no setup |
| Harvard CS50P: Introduction to Programming with Python | Full university course, optional edX certificate | Free (certificate paid) | 9-10 weeks of material, roughly 30-40 hours | Learning Python properly from zero |
| Machine Learning Specialization (Andrew Ng) | 3-course Coursera specialization on supervised and unsupervised learning | Coursera subscription (audit for free) | About 2-3 months at 8-10 hours a week | Understanding how ML models work |
| Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate | 7-course certificate covering Python, statistics, regression and ML, 200+ hours | Coursera subscription | Under 6 months at under 10 hours a week | Analytics roles that need a Python credential |
| StatQuest with Josh Starmer | Short YouTube explainers on statistics and ML | Free | Self-paced | Understanding concepts behind the code |
What to aim for as a non-engineer. Be able to load and clean a dataset with pandas, make charts, run a regression or classification model, and explain the result in plain business language. Skip deep learning unless you are targeting data science roles. For Hindi or English video walkthroughs, search YouTube for CampusX or Krish Naik.
Proof of work. Build a small notebook on Kaggle that predicts something business-relevant, such as customer churn or loan default, and write three sentences on what a manager should do with the result.
Skill 5: GenAI and AI fluency for business
Employers now expect MBA and masters hires to use AI tools to research, analyze and draft faster, and to explain where AI fails, so a short, credible AI learning track is worth 2-4 weeks of your time.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generative AI for Everyone (DeepLearning.AI) | Non-technical course by Andrew Ng | Free to audit, certificate may be paid | About 3 hours | Everyone, as a first step |
| AI for Everyone (DeepLearning.AI) | Non-technical AI strategy course | Free to audit, certificate may be paid | About 10 hours | Managers and strategy roles |
| DeepLearning.AI short courses | Hands-on courses built with AI companies | Free | 1-2 hours each | Prompting, building simple AI workflows |
| Google Cloud Generative AI Leader | Non-technical certification, 90-minute exam of 50-60 multiple-choice questions | $99 exam fee, free prep on Google Cloud Skills Boost | 2-3 weeks | Business roles at firms using Google Cloud |
| Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (exam AI-901) | Foundational certification; AI-901 replaced the retired AI-900 exam and expects basic Python | Free prep on Microsoft Learn, paid exam (check current price) | 3-4 weeks | Roles at Microsoft-centric firms and consultancies |
| Elements of AI | Free course by University of Helsinki | Free | Self-paced, roughly 30 hours (approximate) | Concepts and limits of AI |
What interviewers actually ask. Expect questions such as how you used AI in a past project, how you checked its output for errors, what data you would not paste into a public tool, and where AI would change a process in the firm you are interviewing with.
Proof of work. Pick one task from your MBA or internship, such as market sizing, a competitor teardown or a monthly report. Redo it with an AI tool and write half a page on time saved, errors you caught, and what you would not trust it with.
Skill 6: Domain and strategy knowledge by track
Interviewers expect you to know your target function's vocabulary, current events and common frameworks, so choose one track and spend 4-6 weeks building depth, then keep reading weekly.
| Track | Typical employers | What to learn | Where to learn it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product management | Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Flipkart | Product sense, metrics, prioritization, estimation, execution | Exponent's free PM interview guides, Lenny's Newsletter, Reforge |
| Finance (banking, markets, corporate finance) | JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Barclays | Accounting, valuation, M&A, capital markets, current deals | Investopedia, Wall Street Oasis, Breaking Into Wall Street, plus a daily business paper |
| Consulting and advisory | McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG, Accenture | Two or three industries in depth, digital transformation, operations and pricing basics | McKinsey Insights, Management Consulted, firm reports on your target sectors |
| Operations and project management | Amazon, Walmart, Tata group, Reliance, Accenture | Supply chain, process improvement, project planning, Agile and Scrum | Google Project Management Professional Certificate (6 courses, 140+ hours, about 6 months at 10 hours a week) |
| Marketing, brand and growth | HUL, P&G, Nestlé, ITC, Marico, Dabur, consumer tech firms | Consumer insight, positioning, digital channels, marketing analytics | HubSpot Academy (free courses and certificates) and live campaign case studies |
How to build depth fast. Read one sector report a week, follow three company earnings calls or annual reports in your track, and prepare a 2-minute view on one recent industry news item that you can bring up in any interview.
Proof of work. Write a 2-page teardown of a company in your target sector, covering its business model, three key metrics, two risks and one recommendation. Interviewers can ask about it directly and it doubles as a writing sample.
Skill 7: Communication, storytelling and behavioral interviewing
When two candidates have similar grades and skills, the one who tells a clearer, more specific story usually gets the offer, so treat communication as a skill you train weekly rather than a trait you either have or lack.
| Resource | Type | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naukri Campus: STAR method guide for freshers | Written guide with examples | Free | 1-2 hours | Learning the Situation, Task, Action, Result structure |
| TalkDrill: behavioral question guides | Question-by-question STAR answer examples for Indian campuses | Free | Self-paced | Building your story bank |
| Toastmasters: find a club | Weekly public-speaking practice, with clubs in many Indian cities and online | Membership fee, free guest visits | Weekly meetings over 3-6 months | Speaking with confidence and structure |
| PrepLounge peer practice | Mock interviews with other candidates | Free trial, then premium | 90 minutes per session | Case and fit-interview practice |
| The Pyramid Principle (Barbara Minto) | Book on structuring written and spoken arguments | Paid | 2 weeks | Emails, memos and slide storylines |
| Harvard Business Review | Articles on presenting, feedback, negotiation and leadership | Limited free articles | Ongoing | Business communication and leadership vocabulary |
Build a story bank. Prepare 8-10 real stories from projects, internships, work or clubs that cover leadership, conflict, failure, working under pressure, influencing without authority, and impact with numbers. Aim for 60-120 seconds per STAR answer, ending on a measurable result.
Practice routine. Do two mock interviews a week for 8 weeks, record yourself once a week, and fix one habit at a time, such as filler words, long answers or burying the conclusion.
Written communication. Practice writing a one-page executive summary and a 5-slide storyline for a problem you worked on. Lead with the answer, then give three supporting points.
Certificate comparison
Pick one or two credentials that match your track and finish them, rather than collecting many; the table runs from shortest to longest.
